6 things to do in Montreal with friends

A view, a shared lunch, a walk by the water. Pick two or three stops and leave room for the rest.

For a day with friends in Montreal, choose Mount Royal for the view, Jean-Talon for food or the Old Port for a riverside walk. La Fontaine and Lachine Canal suit a slower afternoon; the Biosph猫re offers an indoor option. These are choices, not a six-stop itinerary.

A day in Montreal for four friends

Mount Royal, a picnic at La Fontaine and a walk in the Old Port. Allow about 6.5 hours, including breaks and travel. This proposed route uses suggested times to help you plan the day.

  1. 09:30

    Start at Mount Royal

Meet at the George-脡tienne Cartier monument on Avenue du Parc. Allow two hours for the climb, the lookout and the descent. This leg involves slopes; check trail conditions before setting out.

  2. 11:30

Head to La Fontaine for lunch

Allow 45 to 60 minutes to reach the park and pick up food, then take a picnic break. These are planning allowances, not live transit times.

  3. 14:00

    Finish by the river

Allow another 45 to 60 minutes to reach the Old Port by walking and transit. Meet at the Clock Tower, walk the quays and finish around 16:00.

A planning budget of CAD 31.25 each

For four adults, with a 24-hour transit pass each and an outdoor picnic. All figures here are Canadian dollars, not USD.

CAD 31.25

CAD 20 per person for food is an editorial allowance, not a quoted menu price. The total excludes accommodation, dinner, alcohol, rentals and ticketed attractions. Use your actual receipts.

The ARTM fare schedule effective July 1, 2026 lists the 24-hour All Modes A pass at CAD 11.25. Checked November 5. Each person needs their own fare; compare other tickets if you make fewer journeys.

When rain changes the plan

Replace the mountain and picnic with the Biosph猫re and a meal indoors, rather than trying to fit everything in. Adult visitor admission is CAD 25.50 outside the Montr茅al metropolitan community, or CAD 18.50 for eligible CMM residents, checked November 5, 2026. With the same food allowance and transit passes, four visitor tickets bring the example to CAD 227, or CAD 56.75 each. Check opening days and current prices before booking.

Espace pour la vie: museum admission

In winter, allow for ice and earlier darkness. The mountain route is not a step-free itinerary. Check the city鈥檚 access information if anyone needs a route without stairs or slopes.

Six places to build your day around

  1. Visitors looking over snowy Montreal from Kondiaronk lookout

    Mount Royal

Walk up to the Kondiaronk lookout for the downtown view. Leave time to stop together instead of turning the climb into a race.

    The practical details

    Allow 1.5 to 2 hours
    • Pick the same park entrance before leaving. Check the city鈥檚 access notices and trail conditions.
    • Our suggestion: bring water and choose shoes for the weather, especially on icy days.

  2. Jean-Talon Market building and entrance in winter

Make lunch a shared tasting in Little Italy. Choose a few things to divide between you, then let everyone add their own favourite snack.

    The practical details

    Allow 1 to 1.5 hours
    • The market opens year-round. Check individual stall hours before planning a late lunch.
    • Agree on a shared food budget before ordering; keep personal purchases separate.

  3. A wet waterfront promenade at Montreal鈥檚 Old Port

Meet by the river and wander the quays. This is a good place for a conversation, a photo stop and a break from ticking off attractions.

    The practical details

    Allow 1 to 2 hours
    • Choose a named meeting point, such as the Clock Tower. Keep the walk separate from ticketed attractions.
    • Our suggestion: bring a layer for the waterfront and check seasonal access before going.

  4. Tree-lined section of the Lachine Canal in Montreal

Follow a short stretch of the canal instead of committing to the whole route. Around Atwater, the outing can be a waterside walk with a food stop.

    The practical details

    Allow 1 to 2 hours
    • Choose your turning point together. Walking, cycling and boat activities need different amounts of time.
    • Check Parks Canada鈥檚 notices for the section you want. Bike or boat rentals are a separate expense.

  5. A pond and shaded paths in Parc La Fontaine

Bring a picnic and take a loop around the ponds. Keep this as the unhurried part of the day, with room to sit and catch up.

    The practical details

    Allow 1 to 2 hours
    • Our suggestion: each person brings one item, with a shared list to avoid six bags of chips.
    • Adapt to the season. Winter skating depends on the city鈥檚 opening notice, not just cold weather.

  6. The geodesic sphere of Montreal鈥檚 Biosph猫re behind trees

Choose the environment museum in Parc Jean-Drapeau when the group wants an indoor visit. The sphere itself is worth a stop outside before you go in.

    The practical details

    Allow about 2 hours
    • Check the current exhibitions, opening days and tickets on the official site before crossing to the island.
    • Our suggestion: agree on the visit first, then add a park walk if the weather allows.

Free access refers to the walk or park, not transport, food or rentals. Check current museum tickets before booking. Local prices are in Canadian dollars (CAD); durations are our planning suggestions.

Work out the shares

The calculators are free, with no account needed. Copy the result to share it with your group.

Places & visitor information

If one person pays for a shared lunch, record who joined before moving on. Spliz keeps those expenses together so the group can see each person鈥檚 share.

Organizer questions

Can we do all six in one day?

We suggest choosing two or three. The places are spread across Montreal; leave time for travel and a meal rather than rushing between them.

What should we choose when it rains?

Check the Biosph猫re鈥檚 current opening days and exhibitions. Reserve the visit if required and allow for the journey to Parc Jean-Drapeau.

How do we keep the shared budget fair?

Agree on shared purchases before paying. Keep individual tickets and drinks separate if not everyone joins. Local costs are in CAD; repayments recorded in Spliz are made outside the app.

All moments

Keep the picnic and tickets in one group.

If one friend buys the picnic and another buys four transit passes, add both expenses in Spliz with the four participants. Keep personal purchases separate.

Friends install the app, then join as guests. Repay outside the app and record the repayment in the group.
