San Francisco with friends: two days out to choose from

Choose a San Francisco plan with friends: a Presidio picnic or Ferry Building food stops. Routes, group decisions and a sample shared budget.

For a San Francisco day with friends, choose either Presidio Tunnel Tops and Crissy Field or the Ferry Building and a waterfront walk. Both plans leave room to talk and eat without booking a full day of attractions. Pick one area first, then agree on transport and the food budget.

In this guide

Plan one: meet at Presidio Tunnel Tops

Presidio Tunnel Tops combines public lawns, viewpoints and places to eat near the Presidio Transit Center. The official visitor page confirms that the park is free to enter. Getting there, parking, food and reserved facilities can still cost money, so do not describe the entire day as free.

For six friends, choose a recognizable meeting point near the visitor center rather than sending the name of the whole park. Our suggested plan is to arrive late morning, explore the viewpoints, then decide whether to continue toward Crissy Field. Leave time to return at the pace of the slowest walker. The bridge view depends on the weather; it is not a reason to rush anyone.

Bring a picnic without assuming a table is reserved

The community tables at Picnic at Transit are available on a first-come basis. That is different from booking a picnic site. If a guaranteed space matters to your group, check the Presidio鈥檚 reservation options before making it part of the invitation. A shared table is not yours until everyone arrives.

Ask one pair to bring the main food, another to handle drinks and another to bring reusable supplies. Pack what the group can carry back out. Give people the option to buy their own lunch instead of entering the shared grocery budget. A friend who brings lunch from home should still feel part of the picnic.

Plan two: the Ferry Building and waterfront

The Ferry Building Marketplace brings food shops and restaurants together on the waterfront. Choose this plan when the group would rather browse and pick different meals. Check individual business hours before sending a meeting time; a building being accessible does not mean every counter is serving.

Set one time to regroup after browsing. Each person can buy lunch within their own limit, while a shared dessert is optional. Continue along a section of the Embarcadero that fits your available time. This is a separate day-out option from the Presidio plan, not an instruction to walk between both before lunch.

Keep the weather backup in the same area

If strong wind or rain makes the picnic unappealing, choose an indoor meal or another agreed activity before people start traveling. The Ferry Building can provide an indoor browsing stop, but it does not guarantee seating for a large group. Confirm a table elsewhere if sitting together is the main point of the day.

For a weekend visit, compare the Seattle guide鈥檚 approach to a rainy-day plan and the guide to trips with different budgets. Decide on the shared minimum: what everyone wants to do together, with optional additions around it.

A sample budget for six friends

Suppose the Presidio group agrees on $72 of shared groceries and $18 of shared supplies, with all six participating. The hypothetical total is $90, or $15 each. These are planning amounts, not current shop or park prices. Transit, parking and individual drinks remain outside that example.

If two friends bring their own food, recalculate the grocery share among the four who agreed to it. Do not spread the original six-person shopping plan across four people without checking the new amount first. Track actual purchases and their participants in Spliz. For another coastal day, use the beach-day checklist before buying more equipment.

Organizer questions

What can friends do in San Francisco on a small budget?

Choose a free-entry outdoor plan such as Presidio Tunnel Tops, then agree on food and travel costs. The Ferry Building offers a separate browsing and waterfront plan with individual food choices.

Do you need a reservation for Presidio Tunnel Tops?

General park entry does not require a ticket. Community picnic tables are first-come; reservable facilities follow separate rules. Check the site if you need a guaranteed space.

Can you fit both plans into one day?

You can plan transport between the areas, but this guide treats them as alternatives. Picking one gives the group more time together and avoids turning lunch into a transfer deadline.
