The formula for miles and US gallons

Fuel cost = total miles ÷ miles per gallon × price per gallon. Then: each person’s share = (fuel + tolls + parking) ÷ number of people.

Enter the full shared distance. A 150-mile drive each way is 300 miles, including the return. The calculator does not double your input. Prices come from your entries, not a live gas-price feed. The miles mode uses US gallons, not imperial gallons.

For kilometres, switch units. The formula becomes distance ÷ 100 × litres per 100 km × price per litre. Enter the matching consumption and price after switching.

300 miles, four people: $14.75 each

In this fictional example, the shared drive is 300 miles, the car gets 30 miles per US gallon and gas costs $3.50 per US gallon.

  • Fuel: 300 ÷ 30 × $3.50 = $35.
  • Tolls: $20. Parking: $4.
  • Total: $59. For four people including the driver: $14.75 each.

The price and fuel economy are example inputs. Replace them with your own. Insurance, maintenance and vehicle wear are not included.

Should you split the full tank?

Only if that tank covers the shared trip. A $70 fill-up may also cover the driver’s personal journeys. Otherwise, estimate the fuel used for the shared drive or compare fuel use on a consistent basis at the start and end.

If you already know the fuel cost, select “Actual cost.” Add tolls once, in their own field. For an electric car, this mode also lets you enter the charging cost attributable to the shared drive.

Does the driver count?

Yes. Four people means the driver plus three passengers. If your group agrees that passengers cover the whole trip, this equal-split calculation does not represent that agreement. Decide on the split before you leave.

What if people travel different distances?

Calculate each leg with the people who shared it. A $30 leg shared by three people costs $10 each. A second $20 leg shared by the two who continue adds $10 to each of their shares. The final shares are $20, $20 and $10, adding up to $50.

Copy each result before calculating the next leg. Assign a toll to the leg where it was incurred and the people who shared it, following your group’s agreement.

A cost share is different from a repayment. If several friends paid, enter their advances in the who owes whom calculator. It offsets what each person paid against their share.

Amounts are rounded to cents while preserving the total. Leftover cents go in list order. Changing the currency does not convert prices. This tool calculates shares and does not send money.
