5 things to do in New York as a couple

A ferry ride, a long walk, somewhere to sit. Leave room for the part you did not schedule.

For a low-cost NYC date, start with the Staten Island Ferry or Brooklyn Bridge Park. Choose the High Line for a walk with food nearby, Brooklyn Botanic Garden for a slower afternoon, or a bookstore and caf茅 when it rains. These are five separate dates: choose one neighborhood instead of crossing the city to collect them all.

Where to start

In this guide

Pick your plan

  1. 1. Take the Staten Island Ferry at sunset

The city-run ferry between Lower Manhattan and Staten Island is free. Check the sunset time and the ferry schedule, then allow time to get off and board a return sailing. Bring a layer for the wind. This is a working ferry with harbor views, not a boat that stops at the Statue of Liberty.

    The practical details

    • Allow 90 minutes for this suggested outing, including boarding and the return wait. Check departures before choosing a sunset sailing.
    • Bring a warm layer and leave dinner flexible: everyone must get off at Staten Island before boarding a return ferry.

  2. 2. Share takeout on the Brooklyn waterfront

Meet in DUMBO and follow the waterfront through Brooklyn Bridge Park. Pick up food before settling in a designated picnic area; do not build the evening around finding an empty restaurant table at sunset. If the weather turns, move dinner indoors and keep the walk short.

    The practical details

    • Suggested route: meet at Pier 1, walk along the waterfront toward Pier 3, then retrace your steps when you get hungry. Give it an hour before dinner.
    • For two, pack two sandwiches, fruit, water and a light blanket. Check the park map for picnic areas and restrooms before settling in.

  3. 3. Walk the High Line, then eat in Chelsea

Start at the southern end on Gansevoort Street and walk north toward 23rd Street. The changing views, planted railway and places to sit give you enough to do without buying a ticket. Afterward, walk back toward Chelsea Market if you want a choice of food counters instead of a sit-down reservation.

    The practical details

    • Suggested window: 60 to 90 minutes for the walk, then an hour for lunch. Check entrance and elevator status before setting the meeting point.
    • Chelsea Market is at 75 Ninth Avenue, between 15th and 16th Streets. Vendors keep individual hours.

  4. 4. Wander through Brooklyn Botanic Garden

Choose the garden for the season you are visiting, not for a blossom photo taken months earlier. Look at what is in bloom and reserve admission on the official site. Leave the next hour empty: the useful part of this date is having nowhere else you need to be.

    The practical details

    • Use 990 Washington Avenue as your starting address. Set aside about two hours and consult the bloom calendar for your travel month.
    • Adult admission checked October 13, 2026: $22 at the ticket window or $23.67 online including the listed fee. The garden is generally closed Mondays; check exceptions before booking.

  5. 5. Pick books for each other at McNally Jackson

Head to the McNally Jackson bookstore at 4 Fulton Street. Give each other 20 minutes to find one book you would happily lend the other person and one that would start an argument. Compare the picks, read a page and decide whether either deserves to come home. Buying a book is optional.

    The practical details

    • Plan for 45 minutes of browsing, then coffee nearby. Agree on a book budget before turning the exercise into a gift exchange.

Planning estimates per person in US dollars, not venue quotes. They cover the activity and food described; transport, taxes, tips and extra purchases are separate. Check current admission prices, opening times and reservation terms before you go.

Make it happen

  • Choose one neighborhood and a meeting point before leaving.
  • Check the official visitor page on the day, especially for access changes.
  • For a shared budget, agree whether tickets, food and travel count together.

Organizer questions

What can couples do in NYC for free?

The Staten Island Ferry ride is free. A waterfront walk in Brooklyn Bridge Park also leaves you in control of food spending. Transit to the meeting point and anything you buy along the way are separate.

Can we fit all five into one day?

Treat these as alternatives. The High Line is on Manhattan鈥檚 West Side; the garden is in Brooklyn. One main outing and a nearby meal make a better date than repeated transfers.

Which plan works in the rain?

The bookstore and caf茅 plan needs the least weather planning. For any garden or outdoor walk, check the forecast before paying for a ticket and choose an indoor meal nearby as a backup.
