Christmas dinner 2026: how to split the cost
A $360 dinner for 8 adults and 4 children. Work out shares, separate alcohol and count dishes people bring, with a message to adapt for your group.

Hosting Christmas dinner does not always mean paying for all the groceries. Before anyone orders food, agree on a spending limit, who is sharing the cost and what is a gift. Bringing dessert can mean either treating the table or covering a shared purchase. Decide which before the receipts come out.
Christmas Day 2026 falls on Friday, December 25. If you are meeting on Thursday evening too, make a separate guest list for each meal. Christmas Eve costs may involve different people. The worked example below covers one dinner.
Agree on the split before shopping
Ask what everyone can spend, privately if needed. Announcing a budget after buying the food leaves people little choice. Assign the shopping too, so you do not end up with two dessert orders and no main course.
- Food and soft drinks. Equal shares, household amounts or smaller shares for children, depending on your agreement.
- Wine and other alcohol. Split among the people sharing it, if that is your rule. A bottle brought as a gift stays out of the bill.
- Hosting. Cooking and having everyone over take work. You can cover the hosts’ share, but agree who will pay it.
Example: $360 for 8 adults and 4 children
These are made-up amounts, not a forecast of Christmas 2026 prices. The group agrees on one share per adult, half a share per child and wine shared by six adults. Replace the amounts with your receipts, including any delivery charges.
| Purchase | Paid by | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Main course and sides | Alex | $240 |
| Dessert | Maya | $40 |
| Soft drinks | Sam | $20 |
| Wine | Sam | $60 |
| Total | $360 |
Eight adults and four half-shares make 10 shares. The $300 common bill works out to $30 per adult and $15 per child. Wine adds $60 Ă· 6 = $10 for each of the six adults sharing it.
- Six adults with wine: $40 each, or $240.
- Two adults without wine: $30 each, or $60.
- Four children: $15 each, or $60.
That adds up to $360. A household of two adults having wine and two children covers $110. A half-share is a choice in this example, not an age-based rule. You can choose different amounts or divide all costs among the adults.
Count the food someone brings as an advance
Maya is one of the six adults sharing wine. She paid $40 for dessert as an agreed shared purchase, and her own share is $40. She owes nothing more for herself. Asking her for another $40 without counting her purchase would charge her twice. If she is covering a child’s share too, add that separately.
Decide how to treat homemade food before dinner: ingredients bought for the group, an agreed amount or a dish offered as a gift. Do not assign a price to cooking time after the meal. Keep reusable decorations and presents out of the food bill unless everyone agreed to include them.
Someone cancels or only comes for dessert
Before shopping, adjust quantities and recalculate. If an order is already paid for and cannot be refunded, discuss the remaining cost with the person who canceled: their food is still on the receipt. Someone joining only for dessert can share that purchase instead of the full dinner.
A message to adapt for the group
This message uses the example budget. December 6 is a suggested planning date, not a retailer’s order deadline. Check their timing before placing an order.
Keep everyone’s purchases together in Spliz
Create a dinner group in Spliz. Add purchases with the person who paid and the people sharing each one. To include children in their parents’ amounts, enter the agreed exact shares by household. Keep wine as a separate expense. Everyone can then see who paid upfront and what they still owe.
Paying someone back is not another grocery purchase. Check that they received the money before closing the accounts. If you are buying a family present too, keep its budget separate with our Christmas group gift guide.
