Christmas group gift 2026: budget and split the cost

Plan a shared Christmas gift with a per-person limit, delivery costs and unequal contributions. A six-person example and a message for your group.

On this page

A group gift starts with what each person agrees to spend. If six people have set aside $30 each, the total budget is $180, including delivery and wrapping. Choosing a $240 gift first means someone will have to raise their contribution or cover the difference.

Set the limit before choosing the present

Ask for a confirmed contribution, not a reaction to a message. “Great idea” tells you neither an amount nor when the money will be available. Let people suggest a limit privately and agree to different contributions. MoneyHelper’s Christmas guide also recommends discussing gift budgets with family and friends before spending.

For Christmas 2026, you could confirm contributions by November 22, then choose who orders, receives the package and keeps the receipt. This is a planning date, not a shipping deadline. Check the retailer’s delivery estimate for your product and address when ordering, especially for a personalized gift.

Example: a $258 gift shared by six people

In this made-up example, six people agree to a maximum of $45 each. The gift costs $240, but the listed price is not the whole bill.

ItemAmount
Gift$240
Delivery$12
Card and wrapping$6
Total$258
Each person’s share, for six$43
$258 Ă· 6 = $43. A $45 limit is not a target you have to spend.

Lina pays the full $258 upfront. Her own share is $43, so the other five owe her $215 in total, not $258. If everyone’s limit had stayed at $30, the $18 in extras would leave $162 for the gift itself.

When people contribute different amounts

Contributions of $60, $60, $40, $40, $30 and $28 also cover $258. Write down the agreed amounts before buying. Do not replace that agreement with an equal split afterward. Everyone can sign the card regardless of how much they contribute.

If the group can see individual shares, get everyone’s agreement before adding those amounts. If someone wants to keep their contribution private, keep that detail between them and the organizer and share only the total budget with the group.

If someone drops out or the price changes

If one person drops out before ordering, $258 divided by five is $51.60 each. That exceeds the $45 limit. Choose a cheaper gift or agree on a new budget rather than assigning the missing share to everyone else. After purchase, check cancellation options and discuss the money already committed.

A $30 discount brings the total down to $228, or $38 each for six people. If everyone has already contributed $43, each person is owed $5 back. With unequal contributions, agree how to share the saving too. A seller’s promised refund only counts as received once it arrives.

A message to get the group gift started

Change the limit to fit your group. For Secret Santa, people usually buy one gift for one recipient. Agree on a common limit, but do not divide everyone’s gifts among the whole group. Only collective purchases, such as shipping on a combined order, need splitting.

Track the purchase and repayments in Spliz

Create a group with the contributors, leaving out the person receiving the present. In Spliz, add the purchase with its payer and the agreed shares, equal or exact amounts. Each person can see what they owe whoever paid upfront.

Spliz is used here to track an expense that has been paid and the amounts owed. This is not a fundraising pot for collecting money before purchase. If nobody can front the cost, arrange contributions through your usual payment method first and check they have arrived. Do not record repayments as additional gifts.

Keep a separate budget and guest list for dinner on the 24th or 25th. Our Christmas dinner cost guide covers adults, children and the food people bring.
